Labor Day is about more than a day off—it’s about recognizing the people behind the work.
While we often focus on productivity, performance, revenue, hiring, and growth, every organization is ultimately powered by people. Labor Day gives leaders an opportunity to pause and appreciate those who consistently show up, serve customers, solve problems, support their teammates, and make the organization better.
The challenge is simple: when everyone returns after Labor Day, identify one person who makes your organization better because they show up and do the work—and tell them.
Don't just post a generic Labor Day message. Give someone specific recognition and let them know their work matters.
Key takeaway:
People aren't just labor. They're people. Celebrate the people who make the work matter.

[00:00:03] Welcome to Top Shelf Take from SpeakEasy HR presented by Payroll Partners. This is a quick take to cover one topic, share one perspective and give you one takeaway. And now your host, David Noe. Hey there and cheers to you. Welcome to another Top Shelf Take from SpeakEasy HR presented by Payroll Partners.
[00:00:26] I'm David Noe, HR leader with 20 years of experience, small business owner, recruiter, content creator and host of SpeakEasy HR. If you're new here, this is a quick take where we cover one topic, one perspective and share one takeaway. So let's get into it. Labor Day, 2026, September 7th. Thought it'd be a great time to think about and talk about what Labor Day actually means.
[00:00:52] Because for most of us, Labor Day means a three day weekend, maybe a cookout with family and friends, trip to the lake, watch some college football. And let's be honest, it's probably the last official reminder that summer is coming to an end. But Labor Day is a lot more than that. And it first started to be celebrated in 1882 in New York City, September 5th. Thousands of workers came together to recognize the contribution of American workers.
[00:01:20] And in 1894, Labor Day became a federal holiday. So why does that matter today in 2026? I think it's because a lot of times we get so focused on the work that we forget about the people doing the work. We talk about productivity, performance, the deadlines, revenue, growth, payroll, benefits, hiring, retention. And all those things are important to help make a business run successfully.
[00:01:48] But behind every one of those things is a person, a team, and people that want to show up, solve problems, serve customers, take care of their family, and provide for their family. And some of those people may be dealing with things outside of work that we'll never know about. People are messy. People are not perfect. And sometimes the best thing a leader can do is simply recognize that. Think about the people in your organization who consistently show up and do the work.
[00:02:17] People that get there early, stay late when things need to get done. The people who always take care of the customer. They quietly help when everybody else isn't even noticing. They need recognition and probably they deserve more recognition than they get. So when was the last time you actually told someone that you appreciate them? And it's not just thanks everyone for your hard work. It's calling those specific people out. Work is important, but work isn't everything. We don't just work to work.
[00:02:46] We want to build something, provide for our families, create opportunities for ourselves, serve other people, make an impact, and hopefully to leave things a little better than we found them. That's why I think Labor Day is a great opportunity for us to pause and reflect and think about that. To celebrate the people and the people who help us make a difference and help us in our organizations. And tell them, don't just send a generic message.
[00:03:12] Think about the people or one person on your team that really makes a difference. And really show them that this week when you go back to work and recognize them. Tell them thank you. Send them a handwritten thank you card. Buy them a coffee. Do something. Go out of your way and show them you really care. So that's the takeaway for this Top Shelf Take is to think about the people on your team. Go recognize them this week. Help inspire them. Make a difference in their day.
[00:03:41] And really show them that you care about the work that they do. So this Labor Day, it really isn't just about celebrating that long weekend. The fall coming. It's really to celebrate the people. So that's this week's Top Shelf Take. Cheers to you. It's a great day to have a great day.
